We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
Nice picture of the "almost extinct" HH Witchy. I believe we still have a plant of it as I found that pot tuber of it and I think I took a cutting. It is a shade darker than your picture here.

Thanks, Ted. This is one IS darker, but my cell phone camera struggles with saturated, dark reds and purples. I could only get hold of two tubers. One sprouted fine, but was not healthy. This one took months to sprout, but then it grew into a healthy plant, and yay, is the correct variety and everything. Hurray! Hurray!

I hope you were able to take a successful cutting. I will feel better knowing someone else who grows it.

And thanks Noni. :) They certainly cover up a multitude of sins. The only thing I've had time to do in the yard this season is water the dahlia beds.

A slightly better photo of Skiply Ida Bella , the tall plant on the far right hand side of the photo is definatly Ida Bella and so is a lot of that tangled mess , I do not deadhead so the blooms are nicer than they tend to appear here

Benny, is SIB one you plan on growing again, over other purple cactus? If not, why and which purple C is your first choice?

SIB is ok , not sure I would rave over it but it's respectable . It seemed to make quite a few tubers and I needed extra plants to fill in down on that end so I used all of it I had left as I happen to know it makes seeds but I have not seen any of its seedlings stand out yet .
My official answer would be that I'm on the fence about it at this point but will have a lot of it to share if someone were intrested .
HH Summerwine has been nice , HH Karen Lee is also nice , Ideally I want a bloom the size and form of Clearview Edie but with the color of Thomas Edison . I like the strait cactus form and blooms but at the end of the day Semicactus is my true love .

Amanda, if HH Witchy is 'almost extinct', it's time to share with your friends here to keep it going! Hilarious! I volunteer! Hope it gives you many tubers!

I haven't posted much this summer. Spent most of my time trying to keep my plants alive and showing whatever gave me decent blooms. Now that the season is coming to an end, I finally get a beauty (actually 3, all on one plant!) AND ITS TUESDAY!! They'll never make it till the next show on Saturday, Sad but they certainly are worthy and I will enjoy them while they're at their peak. Sure wish I could time them for Friday picking Shrug! .

Kim, last Saturday was the first show of the New England Dahlia Society held in Boyleston, MA. This weekend is the Mid Island Dahlia Society on Long Island. I don't know how close any of those would be for you. I average 2 - 2.5 hours travel time for the shows I attend outside of CT.
