Me, too. I received a bonus of Stillwater Raspberry and planted it in the middle of a bed. It is about 15" tall with 1 1/2" blooms!

If I keep it, it will go into a pot next year for the patio, if I have an extra pot. I'm not interested in anything that small.

I measured my 3 Calico Evening Glow before market today. It is between 8 and 8.5" across and 5-6" deep. I haven't measured the height but I think right around 6' in full sun. What a thrill to have people buy them and walk around the market showing them off!

I got one shaggy dog as a free gift once. It did not grow for me for some reason.

I adore Shaggy Dog. I grew three plants of it this year. The blooms can be very big, but always bodacious. Lovey dubby

Plants of Shaggy dog are huge too. It can get real messy in my garden as I do not remove spent flowers. Since S. Dog, does not drop petals and it does not have a pollen center, the flowers just sort of shrivel up and look very sick. It is a breeding dead end as it does not produce seed or pollen. Margaret always has me collect seed from it's parent on the theory that she may get one in another color. HH Supernova is a sister plant and is a version in a pretty pink. It is only half as vigorous as S. Dog and I only grow one or two plants of it. I am very proud that the lowest score I ever received for seedling show potential was for S. Dog. On the purported scale of one to ten, where one is not recognizable as a dahlia flower and ten wins best in show at every show, S. Dog got something like 1.7. A low score is in the 3s; a very low score is in the 2s. I once got an 8.5 for a high score.

Benny - What do you do with all your dahlias? Are you a florist, or do you just grow for your own enjoyment?

Oh no!! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

It is probably one of those 'love it or hate it' flowers.

I had been wondering why most of my dahlias drop petals, but on some the flowers shrivel and look blighted. Always glad to add to my dahlia knowledge.

Flowers that do not drop petals when ripe make much better cut flowers. Ms. Kennedy is one of the worst as it not only drops petals when overripe, they shatter into a pile on the show table. The trait does make it more difficult to get seeds from the variety as the ray florets can rot and the seed pod will also rot. The retention of ray florets is a genetic trait that is easily passed on to the seedlings. Ms. Kennedy seedlings have a propensity to shatter like their Mom.

I would say I grow mostly for enjoyment .
I may break into limited cut flower sales someday but my primary focus is hybridizing , About 80% of the varieties that are here are for hopeful seed or pollen production .

CALICO GARDENS.

The first row is our test ing for cut flowers row and that is Benny's Beauty on the left end of it. The one to the right of that is "Heather", a really pretty bright pink variagated one by one of the NW breeders.

There are actually 9 double sided rows in that section but some are hiding the ones behind them.
