I received Ketchup & Mustard as a bonus this year, and it is one of my husband's favorites.

My Ketchup & Mustard was stingy with blooms, also. If I remember correctly, with the heat of summer, blooms were hard to find.

Western New York State Dahlias! Dahlias! Dahlias!

Valley Porcupine is just a poorly formed stellar and should be taken out of the NX class.
There are people who want all of the novelty dahlias taken out of the NX class and eliminate it.
I find that some of my customers really like Valley Porcupine mixed with other small pink or cream dahlias and a few pink rose buds. As long as it sells, I don't care what its classification is....
So, I found this one among my noids...as I hoped I would. But is it Ruthie G or Janet Leigh? Its a shorter plant and the flowers are probably not more then 4" across.

Ruthie G or Janet Leigh? Janet Lee and the odds are about 50% that I am correct.
That is about my odds with it too, Ted. I know it is one or the other. I kind of hope it IS Janet because she is even harder to find them Ruthie. On the other hand most of the blooms have been open centered...it may be a moot point. I will, however, collect any seed pods I see on her.
yes, these have been the best Bloomquist Dawn's I have had. Very very pretty! I should have lots of tubers available for trade on this one as I have 3 or 4 plants of it.

WOW! Gorgeous, Noni. Love those BDs. They really did great for you this year.
I bought the Bl Dawn tubers at the Portland Clubs tuber sale when I was visiting down there last April or May. Maybe I better go down and check out their tuber sales next year too?

I ran out to look for you Noni as I am growing both , it looks to be Janet as Ruthie is a shade or two darker pink than your photo and Janet L in person .
I have maybe 20 seeds from Janet so far , should be able to get more . Saw pods on Ruthie G and Taratahi Ruby while I was out there stumbling around with my flashlight
I would be very happy if it is Janet! I will also be happy if it is Ruthie I only found one seed pod on it today but I think I may have already harvested some ...I've been shucking but not gotten to those yet.

This thread is under the photos area on Cubits. I try out new equipment and methods to photo dahlias every year. During 2015 I switched to a Canon G15 point and shoot camera when my digital SLR conked out. I found that taking pictures using a point and shoot camera set to auto was really an easy way to take dahlia photos. This year I found an inexpensive replacement for my SLR camera and decided to try using it with the various lenses that my son and I have acquired. The results were generally disappointing and after some lessons from my kid I found out that in order to get good quality pictures with the SLR, I need to shoot in RAW. I had always avoided RAW as I did not have a program to manipulate the huge files. He downloaded a program and it has a 30 trial period. I found out that when you shoot in RAW, that the pictures are indeed much better than using the JPEG setting. The camera manipulates the pictures before saving in the JPEG format and while the program works well with most subjects, it does a poor job with flowers. So, I shot many pictures in RAW and got some pretty good ones. However, I am going to continue to use the G15 for most of my pictures. There are lots of reasons: it takes a high percentage of good pictures right out of the camera. With SLR you have to go into the RAW program and adjust every picture. The G15 fits into my jeans pocket or coat pocket. It has a rechargeable battery and takes about 300 pictures on a charge. The SLR uses lithium batteries and although it gets about 800 shots, you still have to buy replacements. The Canon G15 has a much better autofocus than the SLR. Yes, if you do everything correctly, you can get a better picture with the SLR. However, when you just want to take a picture, it will be 90% as good with the Canon G15 as the SLR with almost no effort.
