I am glad Ted can take great pictures to put to his site, but I definitley like my little camera that I don't have to think about much when I am taking photos.

Yup, I agree that you have Janet Leigh. I don't have it, but here's Ruthie G.

Hurray! Anyone else wanting Janet Leigh next season, let me know. I had at least 3 plants pop up in different places where I have planted noids, I will warn you though that most of mine were open centered this season.

I have my camera set to tae both raw and Jpeg at the same time. If I am not happy with the one I can always go back to potoshop and open up raw. I have only had to do this with dark purple flowers that come out red.

Lovely picture of Ruthie G. Perhaps we should use it on the cover of our 2017 Portland show catalog.

I liked Ruthie G and Janet Leigh enough this season to grow them again .
My favorite " new to me " Waterlilies this season had to be HH Red Pink Tigress , HH Serenity and Beginners Luck . Also liked Taratahi Ruby , Fern Irene and HH Sprite .

Is there any waterlily you do not like? It may be quicker to name them instead of the ones you like.

I would love to try Janet Leigh. My fingers are crossed for Ruthie G, hoping that I still have clean stock. I sent a couple in for testing this summer, and got unhappy results. I have sent in samples of some others recently, including the one I bought from Birch Bay this spring. Who knows what may have transpired over the summer, but I sure hope at least something tests clean.

Linda, your seedlings I have been growing look very clean. And my seedlings look very clean as well. I did rogue out a few that seemed to come up looking virused and all were from one seed parent that I know was virused so it must have been one of those cases where they did either inherit it or get infected in the seed pod.

I don't have a picture handy that is labeled, but your golden peach bb is my favorite out of all of them you let me try. I definitely want to grow that one again...and it was the one that did not noticably fade on the back petals. ..really a lovely thing!

Several years ago, I got Janet Leigh in a batch of tubers that came from a couple of Canadian breeders. It was accompanied by R. Mona and some other R. varieties by Ralph Sampson. I know it is Canadian. Of course, Janet Leigh was married to Tony Curtis and she was known for Psycho and for being the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis. And perhaps, the dahlia is more famous than her now. Rolling my eyes.

I was giving an informal garden tour to an older friend the other day and when I named off Janet Leigh , she asked me " like the movie star ? " I did not know the answer but promised to ask .
I remember seeing Psycho several times as a kid but Janet and Tony were a bit before my time .
I enjoyed Janet L this year and got a few seeds from her so if the tubers keep I would welcome her back again for next season . I may need to expand Waterlilly alley a bit more to accommodate my WL fetish but true love knows no boundaries Lovey dubby

You need to name your purple WL. Perhaps there is a more current movie star that could be considered. By the way, if you start naming flowers after relatives it is one of those slippery slopes to where all of your relatives expect one to be named after them. Remember that the name must be something you can live with for 20 years or so as a successful dahlia cultivar will probably survive at least that long. Lots of people can and will give you suggestions but you are the one to select the name you like. Remember too that there is a financial reason for a good name as good names sell dahlias. Swan Islands Junkyard Dog is one of the worst dahlias I have ever seen but has always sold well(sold out in many years) .

Oh c'mon Ted - Junkyard Dog is just a primal flower - it's what any 5-year-old would draw if you asked him/her to draw a flower. It speaks to the 5-year-old in all of us (except the dahlia snobs, I suppose.... Whistling )

Hahaha
I have an ongoing list in my notes of potential dahlia names , not sure any apply to purple dahlia yet though .

Love it, Linda! I can see a bed in a big horticultural garden made up of just "Primal Flowers"...I bet it would be very popular. I have some seedlings I would donate to it. (we probably all do.)

Part of the lore about Junkyard Dog was that it was planted in an area where people could see it(and I assume it had it's name by then) and they would ask for it. I find it hard to believe.

I see the crowds of people milling around the Swan Island farm during their open house and cannot help hearing some of the conversations about flowers. Typically it goes like this: Despite being quite mature visitors, they flit around the garden like 10 year olds getting free samples of candy. One says, "look at this one" and the other one a few feet away says the same thing. It used to be that cameras were carried by most people but they have been replaced by cell phones for the most part. The visitor holds up the cell phone and stares at the screen until the picture is just right and clicks the virtual button. They almost never take a picture of the name of the flower and if they do decide to grow that variety I can imagine them comparing that picture to the 360 or so varieties on the SI web site. Then it is off to see another one and the conversation continues: " Look at this one".

I have some blooms - not very many in their natural habitat, for which I'll hope you'll forgive me. Also, with one thing and another I've not crawled down to read labels recently, so many are not identified for which I also hope you'll forgive me.
