Wow Noni - thats a lot of pics - and so many of them are really desirable. How great for you to be able to actually see how the plants grow and produce, and not just seeing a picture of the bloom.

I only have a single plant of the Wyn's New Pastel, but it is a big bruiser of a plant, so I am sure its making good tubers. And I will be happy to send one or two your way. Wyn's King Salmon is getting ready to bloom here for the first time too, which I am looking forward to.

Sylvia, I agree. I really like #58 also. It is tall, sturdy, and has that gorgeous in-curved bloom. I would say it is one i want to have in my garden next year.

I was looking at that one too. Its very much like Skipley Bonanza, maybe a bit deeper and a bit redder. Is it as big as SB ?

In your picture, it looks like a great shade of red - what I would call fire engine red.

#47 reminds me of Crazy Legs a little, but the bloom looks larger.

#30 is also rally attractive. [must be going through a red phase]

#8 mystifies me a little -- is it full of bugs?

Lucky you to see all of these in person.\

This weekend is the California Dahlia Show in San Francisco. My hubby - wonderful spouse that he is - suggested we make a weekend of it so I'll get to see lots of great stuff!

Number 8 was the only flower on the set of 3 bushes at the time and the bees were all over it. I counted at least 4 in that photo. The flower itself is a good sized flower, maybe bigger then a bb.

The sizes are not listed with the pictures and in person it can make a difference on what you think of a flower. For instance number 55 is "A" sized at about 9 inches in diameter and is very impressive.

Hi there,
finally my Dahlias took off, well most of them, and yeaaahhh,
HH Funhouse open its first bloom.
I saved the pic (which Ted kind of sneakily attached to an email when he sent me an helpful answer) of Funhouse and had it on my Ipad as wallpaper pic. It helped me through a wet, grey winter,
so glad that it grows now in my garden...

have a nice weekend, bye, Lin

I picked several Funhouse for the funeral flowers today. You can get really long stems.

I have been growing this as HH Tigress - but colors are more like funhouse - What do you think Ted?

I got hold of a HH Tigress as well,
Mine shows much more streaks, that can vary quite a bit
But
their red ( HH Tigress ) is more a burgundy, quite dark, with HH Funhouse it is a clear, dark red

Perhaps that helps, and I would say that Funhouse blooms are larger

Most variegated flowers seem to sport to different colors. Most often they go to a solid color. Less often they sport to lighter colors. Usually the sports are not very stable and the tubers will go back to the original. The cause is the unique genetics of variegated flowers. They are caused by transposons and by their very nature transposons are not very stable. They have been called "jumping genes" because they wander around the plants DNA turning on and off genes. In the variegated case, they turn off the anthocyanin pigment in an interesting pattern we call variegated. The gene can jump too far and turn off something else and the anthocyanin will be all over the floret, thus a solid colored flower. The variation above just seems to be the transposon being more active and letting less of the anthocynin pigment form and you see more of the yellow.

Funhouse is much larger than Tigress at about 8 or 9 inches in diameter. I bet that it is a pollen seedling of Tigress but I do not know for sure.
