Karma dahlias are patented and if you sell them or even give them to your friends you could be sued for damages. Of course, I am exaggerating(true by the letter of the law) but as a commercial grower I could not even give them away without risk. I know a commercial grower who grows one patented dahlia because it is such a good cut flower. He contacted the patent holder and got permission to keep over the tubers for himself from year to year. That too is technically prohibited under the law.

I didn't know Karmas are patented and that's a good thing to know. Our pink Karma, is not nearly as nice as the peachy/rose one.
If a dahlia has poor type in its first year... what is the likelihood that it's type will improve in subsequent years? Can it improve without being bred to another dahlia with better type?

Whenever big nurseries sell "series " of flowers of similar size or shape but in different colors, there will be good ones and less than good ones in the series. Zahara zinnias are an example. The one that won a medal was Zahara Rose and in our experience, it is the only one that we liked. Karma is no different. Some are good and some not very good.
Many people give a new dahlia two years in their garden before tossing it out. I am a one year toss it out person.

AC Crazy Train. Margaret liked this one.

I grew it for few months then ripped it out in frustration because the centers would pop about the time I got it to the Farmer's Market.

In the picture, it looks like the center was getting ready to blow.
How about another one that impressed Margaret . Hapet Red King.
You are not allowed to drool onto the computer screen. Teresa Bergman showed this one.
I am on my short lunch break as Margaret is having me pick flowers for the show this week end.
She is calling me for the third time.....

Count your blessing Ted , Sheryl has me for her arms and legs. She drops the tv clicker about every half hour. She can not hold things in her hand for any length of time. But she likes football and dahlias so I will keep her.

I got it from Teresa and the blooms were mouth-watering. It was one of my 'unicorn' dahlias. Even more beautiful in the sun I think. Alas, mine grew with really marked up leaves, so I pulled it. Maybe I will try again for 2018.

This one was traded as Camano Zoe... is it possible this is Camano Cloud? I heard 'CC' was a bad tuber keeper, but the tubers seemed pretty sturdy when I potted them.

It could be Camano Cloud. As with some poor tuber makers, they sometimes surprise people with a good crop of tubers. The florets are not revolute for 25% of the length on CC and this may well be it. The florets are impeccably placed and the flower has good depth if it is CC.
CC, you are lucky! I had Camano CLoud one year and loved it. THe next year a duck ran over it and broke off the stem at a critical time. I have not managed it since but I LOVED the soft peachy color! If you have another good crop of tubers, put me down for one!

Ted, AC Crazy Train is great here in the heat, too. Noni, I'm sorry yours popped their centers!
I will try to remember you when I divide, as it's a super good bloomer and grower for us. Good enough that we use it on our FB Banner.
Cynthia, that would be great to try one of yours. And hope it doesn't have a bad reaction to the change in climates...it should be happy back here near where it was born. And I think it might do well at our market right now with its bright and unusual speckles.

I am finally getting some nice HH Tigress. Last year was my first year with it, and it was predomitnately yellow, with a little red varigation. This year I planted two (from the same stock). One has been blooming for a while, is predominately yellow with red varigation (and everyone open centered), now the 2nd one is blooming - and it looks completely different - more what I expected, and I love it.
Last year - nice, but not exciting
