Picture of a 2014 seedling that either will go to the trial gardens or not as I have several candidates. It is a "B" sized flower that is every bit of 8 inches in diameter. It grows 6 feet tall and has really nice show flowers. It makes good tubers too. The bicolor flower behind it is also supposed to go and bicolor flowers always do well in trial gardens. Posted on picture thread as it is pretty picture that deserves to be seen in the middle of the Winter at full size. Cubits does not allow big enough pictures so here is link to see it at full size:
Is that the one we decided was a (Step)sibling to my Salish Salmon? IT sure looks like it. Really pretty, Ted! And the orange and white one too. Do they have names yet?

Noni: Remind me, was Salish Salmon out of Hello Dolly? If that is the case, they are only cousins and share a grandparent. The Orange and white bicolor is Hollyhill Candy Crush named after the game that Margaret used to play. It too is "B" sized.
No, I think Salish Salmon was out of Hollyhill Jeanette but I don't know what the other parent might have been.It could have been Juul's Amber or Sandrine or Lexa or even Margarita.. I'm pretty sure on Salish Whirlwind that it was HH Karen Lee and another HH tall one, but I am not so sure on Salish Salmon. HH Tangerine has been a seed maker for sure here.
I'm looking forward to having Candy Crush in my garden and my cut flower buckets.Maybe one more season?

Jeanette was one of the first seedlings from Tangerine. Karen Lee is a Margarita seedling.

Just what we all need in this frigid weather! Does the B seedling have a name yet?

The photo makes me want to reach out and touch those beautiful blooms!
Ted, I found in my notes that we think Windstorm is a child of HH Karen and HH Margareta. OF course that was just a guess, but it is what you and I kind of figured out last fall.

HH Karen is seedling of Margarita and that would give your seedling about 75% of the genes of Margarita.
Since I love HH Margarita ... I just hope the tubers store well. They looked fine though when I checked them yesterday. 6 more weeks and I can start making cuttings...

This was two years ago. I'm really ready for Spring this year since last year was not a great year for me & my dahlias really suffered. I can't WAIT to have it like this again

Previously, you said that one of your gardens refused to grow. Did you ever find out why? Was it herbicide contamination?

I never did, Ted. It was a newly made bed in our front yard. I've taken a two year break with it and added amendments over those two years. I'm going to try again this year. It was strange, things grew but miniature and didn't thrive. I have a suspicion it was something with the soil.

I would buy some pea seeds and start them in a few samples from the new garden soil and start others in the known good soil(potting soil is best) and compare the growing plants. If the peas are stunted, it could indicate herbicide contamination.

Oh my gosh that's a great idea!! I actually have some peas & will do that. I was worrying about planting anything but extra tubers out there ever again.
Darcy, I will be very interested in your pea test. I finally figured out I had this weed killer toxin from straw I mulched with 3 years ago and last year things finally grew pretty well in that area again. So if this happend about that long ago for you it may be that this year they will do pretty well. Its a shame to have a good patch of dirt and not be able to use it!
