Jennie has a reputation as being a fickle girl who is hard to grow especially in the warmer areas. It fades easily and was not a tall grower for me. But the biggest issue was good healthy stock and most stock would not grow well. Then someone in Washington found good stock and shared it with everybody and the dog. That was wonderful and some unbelievably nice show flowers appeared. Remember as a show flower it won best in show at probably the biggest dahlia show ever, the ADS National show in Vancouver BC in about 1990. . I believe that Jennie the person is still alive and she is the late Phil Traff's mother. She is the epitome of the older, nice mother and would appear at shows to clerk. Nenekazi was originated by the late Cyril Higgo of South Africa and purportedly named after a warrior princess. When it appeared, everybody wanted it and it was considered to be one of the pettiest laciniated dahlias , with the exception of Jennie that most people could not grow or could not get good stock. It grows strong and healthy in most gardens but needs a combination of heat to get the petals to split and shade to get the perfect color. Easy to grow is a real asset. So if you want dahlia perfection in flower that probably will not grow well for you and may never give you the really nice bloom, grow Jennie. Nenekazi is easy to grow but needs some shade an heat to be perfect. There are lots of other legendary laciniated dahlias, most of which are difficult to grow well. Lois V is the one that sold for over $40.00 at an auction and can be an amazing flower. |

I think I got my nice stock of Jennie from Birch Bay Dahlias last year...so I do recommend them as a source. I do like Nenkazi too but I think maybe our weather is not hot enough to help the petals split. They do split some but not anywhere near like Jennie does. Providing that Jennie makes good tubers I will be taking her with me when I move. But she may not like the warmer weather ... I don't intend to breed laciniated floweres but maybe I can find a good spot for a bed just of ones I really enjoy...away from the non laciniated... |

Other dahlias blooming: My Hero with CV Jennae (for color comparison) - for me it is more on the magenta side. Lots of blooms since late July held on nice, sturdy long stems. Sadly, the top of the flower is flat, not rounded! ![]() Spoiled Rotten - blooming since late July - since it is B size, expected more blooms. It also is tall with very sturdy long stems. ![]() Daisy Adair lives! 3 tubers finally sprouted. Very late. ![]() HH Pink Tigress - first bloom ![]() HH Dragon Fire - just starting to produce ![]() HH Dr Rick - has been very productive this year with dozens of nice red blooms, then suddenly decided to change colors. I thought the first one was an aberration, but now there are 2 more! The one with the withered petals was the first one and it wasn't deadheaded because it was interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Normandy Wild Willie ![]() Hy Mom ![]() Verrone's Pink Giraffe ![]() Normandy Orange Fluff - the ants tried to kill it but it has survived (barely) ![]() CV Cameron - oops Tater, the cat, is in the picture again! ![]() |

Daisy Adair is exceedingly rare. Kathy Iler sold their home after Mike died. It was not a good tuber maker and almost no one has it that I know. Dr. Rick: Sometimes flowers sport in color to a better color . I wonder about this one. |

I love your version of HH Dr Rick! I thought I had Dr RIck going for this year but he hasn't shown up yet and I think he would have if he were here. I hope you will be able to propagate Daisy Adair and spread her around a bit more! |

Thanks for sharing your pics, Sylvia. Love that sport of Dr. Rick. That's neat! |

Holly Hill Red Funhouse in bloom. A lovely shade of red. ![]() Lots of buds so next week will look spectacular. Also HH Dragon Fire has lots of buds ready to open. Marked them as late bloomers so I don't worry next year. |

Speaking of HH Dragonfire, Christy Parks won best variegated in show with it in Eugene. That is at least the 6th time it has won best variegated in the shows. Some of my stock went solid red and I hate it as a red. May not have enough of it to sell. |

![]() Here is a picture of River's Sonia from the show. I wonder if it has not yet been introduced. I did say hello to Eugene Kenyon and talked seedlings for few minutes. We shared our disappointment in the 2019 seedlings but both of us had good 2018 seedling years. |

That's really pretty. Did me mention if he will be selling tubers this year? |
|

That;s an interesting form. What was the form classification? |
|

"Did me mention if he will be selling tubers this year?" Of course, I forgot to ask that most important question. He was there with his wife and kid(Boy or girl?). I believe that Sonia Hall is the owner of the former dahlia farm a couple of miles from them. The form is quite probably novelty as it is a fully double orchid dahlia and the ADS has not recognized that form. I will be posting the picture to Face book in the future and certainly there will be more answers. |

Rivers Dahlias,"Did he mention if he will be selling tubers this year?" To add to the intrigue, I talked to a person who also talked to Mr. Kenyon. He also did not ask the direct question if he was going to sell tubers on his website this year. However, he did ask if he is going to sell some specific varieties and the answer was yes if he ends up with enough tubers. So, somehow he is going to sell some tubers and my bet is that there will be limited sales on the website. River's Sonia is not a new release and there may be some tubers for sale. |

Pretty much perfect dahlia weather this year in Way Upstate NY, especially that last 4-6 weeks or so; plenty of rain, not too hot. Here are some of my nicer flowers; just point & shoot iPad type photography -sorry! I still do not get as many blooms per plant - for most varieties - as I would like, and they sure do not last long, on the plant or off. I continue to debate how long to leave a bloom on a plant. Since these are not for 'Show' - for sure - but just for enjoyment, I am trending toward leaving the blooms on the plant even when they are past peak. They still add dramatic color when seen from a distance, like walking by the beds on the way to the vegetable patch. Not pictured, but also had good luck with Vassio Meggos, Tahoma Vivian, AC Devin, ChaCha, Cameo Peach - excellent. Neon Splendor quit on me, as did Harvest Moonlight (purchased new as a replacement tuber - ugh!). Diva is producing a few large, dramatic, deep purple blooms that really last longer than others - I just can't photograph it...turns out looking red! But really a beautiful bloom. ![]() All That Jazz ![]() Bloomquist Vivian ![]() Galen Rose ![]() Gerrie Hoek ![]() Miss Delilah ![]() Raspberry Punch ![]() Deputy Bob ![]() Bridezilla |
|

Glad you had a good season and we like the pictures. That Bloomquist Vivian looks to be a double orchid. Bridezilla looked good in the Swan Island display garden too. Gerrie Hoek is an antique dahlia that people loved many decades ago. |
|
|||
I had Bloomquist VIvian for a year and really liked the intense purprle. It didnt store through the winter for me though. I would love to try it again. |

Nice harvest yesterday for our wholesale florist market Clearview Peachy ![]() Jowey Winnie ![]() Ken's Choice ![]() Sandia Tiger ![]() Formby Art ![]() Sugartown Sunrise ![]() Chimacum Davi ![]() Lakeview Storm ![]() Isabel ![]() Irish Pinwheel ![]() Brookside Snowball ![]() |

All are beautiful, but Irish Pinwheel is my favorite: just magnificent! |
|
|||
Ah, so nice to see Lakeview Storm! The ants ate mine and though it is recovering, I doubt there will be any blooms this year. |
