Croydon Masterpiece! Saw that at Swan's but decided the temps here would never let it bloom as large and beautiful as it should.

Melissa - Steve O - What a pretty flower.
Normandy Lisanne - another one for the wish list? Maybe

Croydon Masterpiece is a 1948 dahlia from Australia. It probably can take some heat.
Wonderful pictures
How big was AC Papa?

Thank you!
AC Papa was BIG. Definitely AA size.
Which reminds me that there should be a Maki in there.

Super picture. Maki may be the biggest dahlia of all. There is rumor that Ken Greenway has a 15 inch diameter seedling.

Wow, Maki is really pretty!
Red Funhouse is still a week or two away, but Pink Tigress is starting to open.

Amanda, that's the first picture of My Hero I've seen this season. I have cuttings, but no blooms yet. It looks redder than I expected it to be. It hasn't appeared at any shows, either.

My Hero was not an early bloomer, like many giants, but the plant looks healthy and the blooms were 'as advertised' versus some 'it' giant dahlias where maybe one bloom in five looks like the advertising image. My phone does not capture certain colors very well, but I would agree that My Hero is more dark red and a bit violet-red on the tips rather than purple. I plan to grow it again next year.
'Spoiled Rotten' still hasn't bloomed for me this year. I guess it lives up to its name in my garden. I will have to up my pampering game maybe. Not ready to give up on it yet.

I judged the giant dahlias at our show and My Hero was there. It won a blue ribbon and was a contender for the best giant flower. It was certainly purple. There is no prize for 3rd place but it would have been the 3rd best giant flower there. It does not have the best show form and is just a bit shallow although the depth is pretty good. I did not take picture of it.
Here is a picture of the other My Hero entered in the show and Allen Manual and his significant other are standing in the background.

Ted, thanks much for documenting the show photos. My Hero is impressive. What is the single(?) bicolor r/w in the back.

btw... do you have photos of your seedings on the bench?

The single bicolor is Union Jack that is probably the very oldest dahlia variety of all. I read that it can be traced to the early 1800s. Terrible stems.

Please do not encourage me to post pictures of our seedlings as I get carried away. I will post some from the show later. I like to post the pictures of the cut flowers and garden and arranging flowers on Cubits. I save most of the show flower pictures for our website and will post some to Facebook in the late Fall when there is a shortage of good dahlia pictures. One problem in posting on Facebook is that people want to buy them and of course they do not even have a name. As I have said, breeding cut flowers is more difficult as there are many more factors that they must have including the most basic: lots of flowers.

I wish I knew what F & P meant. A friend of mine asked Ken and all she got was a :). Fumble and Punt? Geez....
I agree with you, Ted, I will always love Nenekazi...it was the first bloom I ever sold as a cut flower.
