"Irish Blackheart - not crazy about the form - the last row of petals just sort of dangle."
They can dangle all they want in my garden as I really like the looks of this one. I have not yet popped for it as at all the auctions it was bid up past my pocket book.
Second year seedling that is about 8 inches in diameter.

Dr. Rick is named after Margaret's brother in law, the clinical psychologist.
Is Seabeck's Hilda really purple there?

Seabeck's Hilda is magenta leaning toward hot pink - on the red side of purple - about 8am on the color wheel. When I think of purple - like most people - I think of a color on the blue side of purple - around 6 - 6:30am on the color wheel (like a clock.) I would like a dahlia at color 13 and Hilda is at 15 to 16 - using their numbers.

Since dahlias have no blue pigment it is really hard to get a blue purple dahlia. Here it is at the Olympia show where it was the purple-est flower there.
Inside, the color of the light bulbs influences the color of the purple dahlias. Florescent has lots of blue that reflects off the flowers, making them more "purple" You do realize that in the rainbow there is no purple color and the color there is violet. Purple is a mixture of blue and red pigments on our computer screens and when done well our eye sees the purple rather than the red or blue. Violet is an actual color wavelength and it may well be that some dahlias have some violet pigment.

This dahlia is growing in a large tree stump. It has been doing it's own thing for at least the 13 years I have been living on this block. It's interesting to see the plants that have been taking care of themselves for decades in this old neighborhood after those interested in pampering them have long departed.

Pink Mick's Peppermint: I've been wanting to grow this one for a few years and it's a keeper for me. HH Shaggy Dog: great success with it this year. AC Ring of Fire: my tallest dahlia, always.
Country Super Star: one of my top ten faves. Happy to see it again after being without last year. Plus a new variety to me, Jupiter (not shown) from Old House is like a slightly smaller twin. Yay! AC Pillow: New to me. Color seems to get more intense over time. It's been growing on me.

Mick Senior bred several dahlia varieties including Mick's Peppermint, Senior Ball(one of the largest ball dahlias ever) and one we have never heard of called Spartacus. I got to meet him just months before he died. They say he would have introduced many more really nice varieties but was too much of a show perfectionist. I believe he did not like Spartacus all that much as he thought the form could be better. He died before most of the Spartacus sports came out and probably would have been surprised.

Great pictures.
This morning while thinking of how difficult it is to describe a color without using charts and chips, I noticed that there are 3 blooms in the garden that look almost identical in color:
Left to right - Chimacum Del Blooma, Seabeck's Hilda, CV Jennae
I think Hilda can look different - much pinker - because the petals are loose and sunlight can travel through the petals but the petals on the two balls are layered on each other and the light doesn't pass through - making them appear much darker.
There is virtually no difference at all between Hilda and Jennae colorwise. Del Blooma seems a little darker. There is certainly not enough difference to remark upon.

Purple dahlias do very poorly in the shows when it comes to higher awards. The dark color shows all the small color flaws like tiny bug bites and places where a water drop magnified the sun and changed the color.
They do fade in a subtle way and that is that they are less purple and the purple is more maroon. You know, that French word maroon that means brown purple. So purple dahlias in nice cool cloudy conditions are purple but when there is lots of sunlight they change to maroon.
For many years, there was an informal poll on a website asking what was your favorite dahlia color. For the two years that I remember it was purple. HH Purely Purple is one of my favorites for good purple. color.

I have a puzzle...these two blooms are unrecognizable to me. Is it possible that they came from a 2018 tuber of Mr. Optimistic? Could the plants have suffered from our high heat and humidity mixed with downpours? Many of my plants are suffering from a “malaise†of some sort...not vigorous and so far, they are shorter than last years plants.

Looks like genetic break down. My Purple Joy plant was fully double one year and all the tubers the next year were just like yours, very large single flowers having in my case only one row of florets. It is a permanent non reversible affliction.

I am always interested in your info about the originators, Ted. I've considered trying to include this info in DA somehow. It's clear that some of the varieties are related given the 'tags' some originators include in the names of some of their varieties, but beyond that I don't know anything about them.
