We grew and used dill last year a few times , planted some seed a week or two ago so it will be a while but is was planted sooner than last year and it grew quite well . You can definatly smell it when you are near the garden and I believe it is supposed to deter some insect or pest or another .

I planted the shorter " fern leaf " dill and the same " Giant " variety as last year in with the new asparagus that is just sending up small little fern like plants , dumped a bunch of herb seeds in that area so it does not look so bare

I used Bouquet Dill. I can see why it is named so.
Thanks Ted! I am not much of an arranger, though I enjoy it when I'm not stressed out.
I do know that people expect me to arrange the dahlias, even though I really just want to sell them by the bucket. If I can figure out how to get more time in the garden, then I'd be willing to arrange them, with that extra time.

I just sat down and looked through my notes from last year. Last year about this time I had two dahlias in bloom, a pom and an anemone, most of the plants were still under a foot tall, and only 2 or 3 were over 2 ft.

This June, while there are still some shorties, and a group of - "probably won't make it", I have had 15 plants bloom, 4 or 5 plants that are close to 5ft. tall (with broom stick sized stalks), and most of the plants are between 3 and 4ft, with buds on almost everything.

I think I pre-started them a week or two earlier, plus we had an unusually warm April, so the ground was warmer when they were planted out. I certainly haven't fed them any differently. Just the luck of the weather, and the fact that I am getting better at keeping them healthy in baggies under lights.

If I can get the insects under control I am expecting a banner year in the dahlia beds.

Sorry, I was away today and I think the light is too far gone now to take a pic of Twinkle. The center is fuzzing up now so I will wait and catch the next bloom. Plant looks very healthy and there should be many more. Also I think I had at least 3 tubers last year so hopefully there are 3 plants of it out there. I'll do a check up on it tomorrow. I need to weed that bed and put some landscape fabric scraps along the back to keep weeds from growing through the fence. I'm thinking that Twinkle was tall last year and it is under 20" now but so are the rest of the dahlias.

Another big bud on one of the giants, so the NOT Ruthie G #2 will not be the only one blooming soon.

I am way behind too Darcy because of the flooding on the other side. Nothing blooming over there, and many are less than a foot tall. ONLY purples and pinks so far, and not that many. I'll need to baby them a bit since I need to supply dahlias for a Rehearsal dinner in 2 weeks! Luckily, they want pinks and purples! Thumbs up

Noni, NOT Ruthie G #2 looks like a small p/y (lb?) cactus. No curling of petals, not all the way open. Pointy long petals, lots of them.

Those petals kind of go every which way don't they. I think you said it was a bb? Hmmm, do you think I sent you this one? I didn't have a lot of pink ones of this type last year. I had a Bo-Peep that made lots of tubers that I could have shared. I didn't get a lot of blooms off it to evaluate and it was one that someone gave me. I think it was a Swan Island one. That would be my best guess.

Ha ha! Google "Dahlia Vacation" and look at Bo-Peep... That might explain both the flower and the source. Also, it is listed under Alpha Dahlias, rather then Swan Island.

Geof, I really like that Dana Iris. I tried it once and it was terrible. Maybe it likes your shade. Still no blooms here. Most developed buds are on Lakeview Glow, HH Purely Purple, Ferncliff Spice and Rossendale Peach.
Big storm tonight. 70 mph winds in metro, we at least had 50 mph here in St. Paul. 2 inches of rain. I haven't been out to check on dahlias yet.
