Thumb of 2016-07-16/Islander/96db62 #2 Definitely my favorite so far! Tall, long stems, big flowers. I am in love!

I agree
Papageno bloomed for me a little earlier but on such short stems that I did not cut it. I will have to give that one another try! The little (20?) MFD from the trial garden is a cutie.

What is the usual wait time between trial garden and production?

Most go on sale the next season, Sylvia. At least if it did well in the test garden. The breeder has been growing them at home for at least 3 years and so has an idea it is a good one before they put it in the test garden...they are also most likely building up their stock to sell. A few will not make them available to us but most do.

We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
When you enter variety in a trial garden, you agree to sell it the next Spring. You can mark a box on the entry form that you will not sell it, but if you check that box, your entry is not eligible for the medal competition. It is very rare that trial garden entries are not released the next year but it does happen once in a while.

I am still looking for one that was on the test garden 3 years ago. Its name was "Buttercream" but it was not a breeder I know. As I remember it, it was a bb formal dec in a soft yellow that made lots and lots of flowers. That was the same year Bloomquist Tori was at the garden and I wanted to adopt both of them and take them home with me!

Correct me if I am wrong, but the names are not known until the results are published.

I am enjoying Hart's Lemon Chiffon this year, which has grown to a vigorous six foot bush this year. (It's a soft Noni approved yellow with blush tips) Lovey dubby

That is correct. When the results are published they are identified by the stake # that I am using, then tell what prizes it won, what it scored, and where you can buy it. I think those results come out in about October? We will certainly be talking about them here when that happens. I don't know who the breeder is...I am just a lowly deadheader and disbudder Big Grin . I do know of at least one breeder who is working on this type of flowers but I am sure there are others too. I just knew the moment I saw it that it was destined for my garden! Marilyn laughed at me...she said, "I knew you would like that one!"

While visiting a dahlia garden the other day, I saw a few I really liked but could not find names for, nor did any of the people working there have any answers.

Can anyone take a guess at these two:
#1
Thumb of 2016-07-17/sylviap/9324e0

#2
Thumb of 2016-07-17/sylviap/ce5bb7

There are a few more I'd like to know the names of, but these two are at the top of the list.

Well... since we are all here, maybe this one?

#1 is lovely! Wish I could help with names. Your best bet would probably be to ask permission to have a cutting and give it your own personal name. It seems pretty rare that no-names are IDed.

Is there a required level of sales or is it more of a " gentlemans agreement " ?

Sylvia, how hot has it been? Becuase #2 looks like it's maybe just suffering from heat. I have some that do that - they give up and don't form all their petals in the heat so they end up going open centered.

They either do that or end up looking like Audrey II, with big 'toothy' looking 'jaws' because the buds are misformed.

I would say that all 3 of those have been affected by something, most likely heat.

No heat there. We went over to Mendocino and walked though the botanical gardens. Mendocino is on the North Coast with foggy nights and mornings and daytime highs rarely higher than 75. We wore jackets the 3 days we were there while it was 100 at home only 200 miles away. It's so cool and misty there that fuchsias run wild in gardens. The garden in past years has been quite large, but naming has been hit or miss. Some have tags and some don't. Since all the signs says "Stay on the Grass" there is only so much looking under shrubs that I can get away with. Believe me, when nobody was about, I was poking in everything. I can't even match them with the pictures they have on their web page [Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.] The gardens are wonderful - almost 50 acres of plants along the headlands. There is one man who is in charge of the dahlias and it's not as organized as one would want, but the plants are beautiful.

Dahlias! Dahlias! Dahlias!
Big Guy Slice eaten by Japanese Beetles, as if being in the middle of a severe drought wasn't enough. They have decimated the roses and now they are starting on the dahlias as they bloom in the side garden. I just don't have time right now to put netting on the blooms right now to protect them.
