I wonder why I would like this picture? From the Victoria show and Connie Young Davis entered it.

A photogenic 2nd year seedling. Or maybe it's a 3rd year seedling. It didn't bloom the first year. My fault. I almost killed it but it grew back enough to make tubers. I figured it deserved a solid chance and I was rewarded.

Honey Gold works for me.

Nearly everything in my garden has gone open centered with this heat. Please please cool it down, Weather Gods! I am trying to collect seeds but this is ridiculous....And I don't want to encourage the" going open centered' trait!

Great color and it looks like it might have good WL show form. Are you going to release her this year?

There are so many pink waterlilies. Jury is out.

... If it has a solid blossom attachment and decent stems, the cut flower people would need it. I've been cycling through water lilies and haven't found a good cut that I can keep stored. (With exception to HH Pandora. What a beast of a plant and flower. Too bad I can't move the color for events right now.)

I had always heard HH Sweet 16 was a good WL cut flower. We lost it due to "sold too many and forgot to keep some for ourselves". I have it back this year but cannot imagine being able to sell it. HH Pink Parfait is very nice and only an average tuber maker but they store well. I do not believe we have shared it with anyone yet.

Cosey, I haven't had any great blooms on your seedlings yet but there is a big lavender one trying to open that might be interesting. It has a very large bud...lets hope for a good center on it!

Margaret forbade me from posting this picture of the bouquet on our kitchen table. That must have meant she wanted me to post it. Rolling my eyes.
These are all seedlings from the second year garden.

Amanda is always a polite supporter of my pictures. I think the reason Margaret was hesitant was that the flowers were picked for their weird reddish colors and that is hard to photograph.

I must confess that the least formal of the bunch is my absolute favorite. But yes, I have learned to expect the unexpected when ordering reddish dahlias from photographs. I love that people share their photos and know how encouraging it is to know they were appreciated. It's so easy when we are busy to appreciate silently.

As you breed dahlias, there are lots of non traditional colors in the seedlings. In this batch the colors are light brick red or you could say red that is dull and perhaps has some gray pigment in it. Show judges downgrade dull colors although a well presented dull red flower may still impress a judge. If dull brick red is the next color fad we are ready!

When I grew Creve Coeur, I was very surprised to find that it was a new-to-me brownish red instead of the ruby red/fuchsia in the images I had seen. N-Force also has a rusty red that my camera wanted to see as stop sign red.
I get the idea that those 'dull' colors would be seen as 'antique' and 'romantic' in some circles. I don't object to them. I hope that IC makes the cut. :) Or dodges it as the case may be.

Those are great! Are the two top-right WLs from the same plant? If not already, I predict this color will be the next rage. Maybe instead of referring to the color as "dull, brick red" you could promote it as "Bridesmaid Burgundy" or similar.

Those WLs are from the same second year seedling.

It is very tall and healthy and has long stiff stems. It also has a couple of extra rows of florets and there is not much dahlia show in its future. Dahlia arrangement and dahlia bouquet may work well for it.
