Oh my goodness..I bet that arrngement was beautiful. I might still have all 3 of those blooming and will have to try combining them. Its been so hot in the house all summer a bouquet would hardly last for 2 days so I had kind of stopped making any. Here is hoping for some" Bouquet Weather "before the next frost!

That AC Twisp is gorgeous!
For those who aren't in the PNW, Twisp is a small town in eastern Washington state.

Leo looks like it might fit nicely with AC Hawk and AC MP. Love jewel tones!
AC Leo is a brighter red than those two.

I compared AC Leo in the garden with other dahlias, and... At least in MY garden at THIS moment in the season, the red in AC Leo was a perfect match for the red in AC Abby, Kenora Wildfire, Myrtle s Brandy & Barbershop.
AC MP, on the other hand, had the same slight reddish purple of AC PAC, AC Janis, AC Zed & Addison June.
AC Hawk, AC Thomas and Hapet Duplo's deeper reds seemed to match well...
I wandered every bed with an Irish Blackheart trying to match THAT amazing red, and the closest was Karma Choc & HollyHill Ripple. I bet the Hh Black Beauty, HH Black Widow & HH Bewitched would have matched, too.

Talking about Irish Blackhart this bloom rocked my world this morning! Just perfect, with no pollen center but Oh-So-Tiny! Not a sport, just a single fluke on a regular plant.
If you think Steve might enjoy seeing this pict, please forward to him or post on social media.

Black dahlias lose some of their pigment this time of the year. Seedling of Black Beauty that is same color as parent.

That's valuable information, something I never noticed before and something to consider when selecting seedlings to save. With tomatoes there are 3 genes (at least) that regulate the anthocyanin expression. One of those (makes purple on both the foliage and on fruit) Is only expressed when the temperature is cool. Another one of the genes needs part of the UV spectrum to activate the gene and create "purple" tomatoes. The part of the tomato (bottom, etc.) that does not get sunlight will not turn purple. All three of the genes are additive so it can get interesting.
Does anyone happen to know which genes are responsible for the anthocyanin expression in dahlias? (I would Google it except I am supposed to be outside harvesting my pumpkins).
I wonder, specifically, which genes are responsible for antho expression on the dahlia ray floretsf, disc florets, and plant (stem).

Anthocyanin in dahlias comes in different versions and Lawrence in the 1930s, called one of them "pale anthocyanin" as it faded almost immediately in full sunlight. Kenora Wow has this pigment. The version that is in Black Beauty is much more stable but also not as vibrant in color. A study said that black dahlias are formed by guess what? More of the pigment as black dahlias have lots of the red anthocyanin pigment. I bet there are 5 or 6 versions of anthocyanin in dahlias. And remember too that the color of anthocyanin is affected by the pH of the vacuoles and that some white pigments affect pH in the vacuoles. Purple dahlias are the result.

Sellwood Glory, the 1950 sport of Ballego's Glory which was from about 1936 was named after the neighborhood in SE Portland near where Cubits member Linda Taylor lives. Hard to grow, hard to keep and generally admired by all who see it.

For as poor of a keeper that it is, it's a wonder that Sellwood Glory is still around. I grow it in 6" pots sunk in the ground. Pull them up and dry them and hope at least one sprouts in the spring for cuttings ...

Your color comparisons were great, CC. So helpful to see them that way. I guess Leo is a little too red for me. I grew AC Abby because Ken recommended it a couple years ago. Pretty flower, just not my color.
I grew Irish Blackhart next to Fidalgo Blacky and Bloomquist Kevin G. They all looked nice together, although I don’t think I got a good combo picture like yours.
