Hollyhill Pink Cadillac in the rain. It made a few more tubers than usual and we may sell it during our next round on the website.

Picture of HH Six in One taken over 10 years ago. We no longer sell it but grow one or two each year.

A unnamed person posted our Christmas picture and cropped our names off of the bottom of it. Margaret and I spent some time getting the picture the way we wanted it. I had the person delete it immediately.
That must have been shocking when you first saw it.
..Its such a lovely picture...and really low of someone to take it without even crediting you!

Ted, It's not nice when people use photos which are not their own. After my experiences on FB, I now overlay my “farm†name in most of my photos. I try to find a spot where it would be hard to crop out without ruining the pic. Sometimes, I reduce the opacity so the name is almost transparent.

Hardly any posts on Cubits lately. Seedling picture in front of HH Contessa.
I keep checking to see if anyone wants to talk but apparently not. Glad you do, Ted. Especially when you have photos! Those colors look so great on this dreary January day!

I keep checking, too. It's so quiet here. And I am tired or winter already!

That's funny, all of us cooped up by the weather wondering why no one wants to chat! I often check and see nothing posted and then sometimes I wonder how many others are doing the same. It's hard to think of interesting dahlia topics sometimes when it's mostly all speculation and no action right now.
You are welcome, Em!! I do appreciate the feedback.

I'm feeling a bit like a mama bear, who has gone into hibernation for the winter. Looking forward to spring, sunshine and flower chats. Till then, I'll be eating too many comfort carbs and napping a lot! LOL
Maybe you need a trip west. Brilliant sunshine , frosty mornings and pleasant afternoons. Unfortunately I think we are about to get hit with an inversion...that would be typical January weather, where the polution gets trapped under the high pressure.
That is such a fun one! I would like to find one to add to my making seeds" patch. I have this one seedling that shows the mottled pattern and would love to add more of it to it... . This one morphed into this last year...I would like to keep working with it. I call this one "Quilter's Star" for its "patchwork" appearnce.

The horizontal stripes on the back of the florets is a trait that can be passed on to seedlings. Les Connell bred one called Tahoma Giraffe that had the trait but it was a poor tuber maker-keeper. We grew it for two years. Roland Verrone had several seedlings that had acquired the trait from somewhere. I do not know if it is the same trait when the horizontal stripes are on the front of the petal but they may be same trait. The ADS does not recognize this pattern as anything to be named in their naming scheme. That is irresponsible as it is something that needs to be preserved and enhanced.
Also, it is obvious that dahlias can have different colors on the front and rear of the florets. Here we have not only different colors but a different color pattern too. In Pink Giraffe the obverse of the petals is solid color of an off yellow while the reverse has the horizontal pattern of dark pink broken up by the yellow pigment showing through the gaps in the dark pink pigment. Noni's Twilight Girls has the trait where the the florets are very different in color in the fronts and backs of the petals. This contrast in colors may not be obvious in some formations as the reverse of the florets may not be easily seen. Informal decorative flowers that have twisty petals seem to show of the trait rather well but other forms show it well too. For example Lauren Michelle is a waterlily as is Rawhide and both have the trait. Bodacious and Nick Sr and the sport of Nick Sr, My Hero show off the trait very well and the petals twist enough to see the backs easily. My small miniature ball seedling 1748 has the trait and you can see the backs of the petals in the center of the bloom.
I would like to to verify that variegated flowers can have variegation on only one side of the florets but I have not done much research and so far have only observed the same variegation on both sides of the florets. I am nearly certain that this is not the only pattern.

Old picture. Hollyhill Angela in front of Hollyhill Margarita. We have lost all our stock of Angela. It was a super cut flower and show flower but a shy tuber maker. I like this picture and flowers look better when paired with another variety.
