I've seen your ad and it is gorgeous...I would so love to come to see your show and probably would have tried to do on the Sunday except that we have tickets that day to circle the Island on the historic steamer (The Virgnia IV) that used to do ferry service back in the beginning of the last century when my grandparents were here. Tickets were over $100, each as its a fundraiser for the Historic Society here. We will be circling the Island, first time to see much of it from the water, that is away from the current ferry route, and there will be a narrated history of the Island as we go. It should make for a pleasant Sunday.

Ken Stock lived in Bournemouth, England. He was truly a master gardener and premier dahlia breeder. I believe he is still alive but unable to garden anymore. This picture was in the local newspaper in 2010. One my favorites that he bred was Monet Glory, a flower he gave away to a friend and was unable to get back stock while he was still growing dahlias.

I am placing this picture of a second year seedling in the photo section of Cubits rather than the hybridizing section. It can be a very nice flower as proven by the picture but it needs a third year to test it in all conditions. I will probably use the picture in our web site as a header picture. In that case, I would photoshop the two stubs above the flower that are distracting. I have done very little adjusting of the picture so far on the color and clarity as the picture was exposed very well. It grows rather tall in the partial shade and this flower was at eye level. It is definitely a lavender color and for me that is pink with a touch of blue.

I am thinking about using this picture on the 2019 website. It is a 2018 seedling picture.

We kept this seedling because it was so ugly. During part of the year it even had a closed center but was just as ugly. It is a rare flower that is so ugly that it is pretty. This is not one of them.

Ted, I hate to tell you this but if you were trying to sell that one in front of your home you would have a mob scene all trying to obtain it! The Garden Club folk went nuts over my open centered madly swirling every direction seedlings! They think this kind has more personality...

The young lady I am mentoring in dahlia growing took me with her to the Seattle Cut Flower Market open house for growers today. We were talking with Dan Pearson and laughing about the difference between what "Show People" think is awful and what our customers actually like...

Margaret has come to the plant's rescue although she is worried that the show people will certify us as insane.

The hummingbirds are zipping all over the place in our gardens. Their beating wings cause a loud hum especially when they zoom by you unexpectedly.

Butterflies are few and far between in our gardens and were much more prevalent years ago.

We had wonderful Swallowtail butterflies for most of the summer this year, as well as other butterflies I didn't know. Also many hummingbirds and finches over the summer. But when I am working I seldom stop to take photos unless it is of a flower...I just enjoy the moment in the here and now Smiling

Love the humming bird wars where the males chase each other like dive bombers and going 60 miles an hour and turning on a dime.
