A nice one, LeeAnn. What is the one next to it at bottom left?

It's a 2021 Snoho Sonia seedling. I think it's a pretty good one.

Ted- you are more precise in your color assessment. I might even counter to say that this bloom could even be better described as a french lilac color. Too bad they don't bloom at the same so I could get a good color comparison.

Snoho Sonia seedling is what I call a smoky pink and it has lavender(perhaps you say light purple) on the reverse as a bonus. Bill Bonnywell(Snoho) would be proud of you. I met him but once and only exchanged "hello how are yous" with him. Had I known he was deathly ill, I would have cornered him and extracted all his knowledge on breeding dahlias. He did some really nice ones.

I LOVE your Snoho Sonia Seedling! It has the colors of Jowey Winnie but I bet it is easier to keep going since it has the Snoho genes. I had a nice seedling from Snoho Sonia a couple of years ago but lost it over the winter which was a big disappointment for me. I hope yours hangs on because I would like ot be able to grow it. Smoky Pink is one of my favorite dahlia colors, particularly when it has some lavender shading.

That's a great color combination! You need to start taking cuttings now so you don't chance losing her in storage. Smiling

I really like Sonia as a seed parent. I have found that the pollen parent matters. She was planted next to other ball forms to get this seedling. Otherwise she'll through a lot of random in between forms in a riot of color. I wonder if Caitlin's Joy is the pollen parent of the seedling above.

Noni- this coloring is very much a sister to Jowey Winnie.

Steve- I have this one already tagged to take cuttings from this spring. One thing I love about Sonia seedlings is they seem to have ample eyes like their mama.

Lee Ann, I hope this seedling grows great and I would love to be able to get it when you have enough to share! How did it do at making tubers last year?

Your Snoho Sonia seedling is gorgeous, LeeAnn. Definitely a keeper. I love the smokiness of it.

I haven't gotten to the seedling tubers yet. Since my foot was still in a boot during digging season, I missed the gift of digging for gold. I was stuck washing everything.

The seedling tubers are my carrot to get the dividing finished. I'm half way done now.

Ted, that is a lovely bloom! Is the color more red or pink? Is it a pom? I’m loving the blend of these two colors.

Long nerdy answer:
This one is about 3 inches in diameter. I would classify this as a flame dahlia and the red pigment is a red orange. When breeding for pink the base color needs to be white and in this case it is yellow. The parent of this one has a base color of white and is blended with a purple color and I like that color scheme a bit better than flame. This seedling got a yellow "base pigment" (white and yellow are in the same group of pigments and yellow is white with another chemical added onto it) and when the anthocyanin pigment overlays the yellow it is red. When it overlays white pigment, anthocyanin is purple as the white pigment has a slightly different pH.

Flame colored seedling.

Did this seedling make it? If so, what is its name?

Seedling of Jessica from 15 or more years ago. Stopped using Jessica as a seed parent as tubers of the seedling would rot as did this one and it was gone the second year. .

HH Summerwine is a seedling of Lakeview Glow. Like it's parent it is an "over bloomer" meaning it makes too many flowers and needs some grooming. It is about 3.5 to 4 feet tall and makes fairly nice tubers. My stock is so sick that it hardly grows and sometimes after growing something that is sick for a few years, it will come back and be good again. It has not happened in about 3 years now. It may be goner here. It is not part of our breeding program for several reasons: (1) too short (2) over bloomer (3) seems to acquire a virus (4) Genetics not related to other Hollyhill varieties. (5) It generally does not make seeds.
