Always keen to see more dahlia photos!
I always liked this picture. Hard to believe it is a dahlia.

My daughter found this tip for me. Shoot through a cup.

Picture tip: Have Margaret arrange the flowers before you take the picture.
Hollyhill Masquerade, B ID BI PR/W
Flowers about 6-7 inches in diameter. Some are very nice bicolor but most are not. Some have a white blaze but many are solid. Grows about 5 feet tall and has good stems. Will sell it this year. Price not yet determined as I will see how many tubers we harvest.

Gorgeous! That must be what they do for catalogs.

On really small or really large flowers it is nice to take picture of something with the flower so that it's size is easily seen. Cute little 2017 seedling.
Hollyhill Lililliput is the same size flower.

That's a great tip, as an object will give the flower a sense of scale. I remember when QVC would use a simple wooden ruler to show the measurements and scale of expensive jewelry. A 50 cent ruler was used with a $500 ring...and it sure helped them sell a lot of jewelry!

Photos of multiple flowers that are in different colors are difficult. I never did get this one right but this is the best I could do. Step one is of course picking the flowers on a suitably cloudy day. Full sun does not work. Then arrange the flowers(this was not done by Margaret in this case as she would have done a much better job). Be sure not to have the flowers vary too much from front to back as you need all of them to be in focus. I insist on using a tripod for these pictures as you need to get the best focus possible and hand held shots do not work as well. I always take some pictures using automatic settings on the camera as quite often the camera is smarter than me. I have gotten lazy these days and I let the camera do the auto focus. If I am using my digital SLR I would manually focus some of the shots. Since you are using a tripod, you can shoot long exposures. I generally set my little camera to aperture priority, using F8 and then the camera sets the shutter speed. F8 gives you good depth of focus and the colors come out much better too.
Since the white and to some extent the yellow flowers are much brighter, you need to take some shots that are a bit dark because the white flowers will burn and be just all white with no petals showing. The colors of the flowers will not be all correct. HH Pixie is too red. HH Black Cherry should be darker. Hotshot should be more flame color.

I posted this photo on Instagram with Hollyhill credit. The farmers and florists are loving it.

Hee!
If you color it rainbow or blue, you could list the seeds on ebay...

I think pictures have more impact when other colors are in the background. I like this picture of HH Tangelo as it shows how orange it is but some of that is because of the yellow and lavender pink flowers behind it.

Yes. The very professional dahlia photos with a black background, I find off-putting. I can't articulate why. Photoshop has a black background, quite deliberately I am sure, and it makes photos look better than other backgrounds.

I used to think black backgrounds looked really good. I remember buying a piece of black cloth to use behind the flowers. Here is a one of the better pictures I took and this was taken in 2001.
The flower was Harlequin, a tri color flower that is probably extinct nowadays.
